I wrote a piece for a Korean media, Slownews, in an attempt to discuss the connection between the welfare state and economic performance of Finland, i.e. Nordic model. Pursuing welfare state has been a hot debate in South Korea – whether it works or not, the benefits and pitfalls. Not surprisingly, the opposing side take examples such as Volvo and Nokia as the failure of welfare state. My story line goes: yes, Nokia went bad, but we still have Fiskars, Suunto, Wärtsila, Kone, Supercell (of Clash of Clans), Rovio (of Angry Birds) … and countless innovations (like Linux) thanks to welfare state that provides fertile ground for healthy and smart people.

스웨덴 복지의 역사를 다룬 시사인의 기사를 보고 페이스북에 끄적거린 글을 슬로우뉴스의 요청으로 기고했습니다. 정규제 한국경제신문 논설위원의 주장에 대한 반론이라고 할 수 있겠습니다. 핀란드 복지 모델이 한국에 그대로 적용될 수 있다는 생각은 하지 않습니다. 노르딕 모델로 대표되는 북유럽 국가들도 자세하게 들여다 보면 각자 다르니까요. 하지만 기업 하나를 예시로 복지와 경제성장의 연관성을 덮어버리는 것은 성급하다고 생각합니다.
