I am a designer/researcher in Ulsan, Korea. I explore the potential of design for public service and policy.
Currently I work at UNIST with a dual affiliation—an associate professor in the Department of Human Centered Design and Technology and an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Carbon Neutrality. Combining these two interests, I direct New Design Studio, a design practice and research laboratory that works with various stakeholders to help create strategic alternatives for a more sustainable future.
Beyond UNIST, I contribute to various initiatives and committees, including founding Public Policy and Service Innovation network (since 2026), serving as a member of the expert team member of the New European Bauhaus for World Expo 2025 Osaka (2024–2025), chairing the Policy Design Division of the Public Designers' Council Korea (2023–2025), and being a member of the Landscape Committee of Ulsan Metropolitan City (2020–2021). Previously I worked in the interdisciplinary master's program Creative Sustainability at Aalto University, where I founded the Design for Government course, while also serving as one of the Demos Helsinki Associates starting in the summer of 2013.
My previous employers include the Strategic Design Unit at the Finnish Innovation Fund SITRA (a.k.a. Helsinki Design Lab) and design consultancies in Helsinki and Seoul. I was also a co-founder of About:Blank, a Helsinki-Seoul-based design-and-manufacturing firm. In 2009, I was selected as one of Korea's Next Generation Design Leaders by the Korea Institute of Design Promotion.
서비스와 정책을 위한 디자인의 가능성을 탐구하는 디자이너/연구자 이승호입니다. UNIST 인간중심디자인공학과 부교수이자 탄소중립대학원의 겸임교수로 일하고 있습니다. 동시에 디자인 실천과 연구를 수행하는 뉴디자인스튜디오를 운영하며 다양한 이해관계자들과 협력하여 보다 지속가능한 미래를 위한 전략적 대안을 모색하고 있습니다.
대외활동으로는 공공정책서비스혁신 네트워크 발족(2026–현재), New European Bauhaus 오사카 엑스포 전문가 그룹 (2024–2025), 대한민국 공공디자이너 협의회 정책디자인분과 위원장(2023–2025), 울산광역시 경관위원회 위원(2020–2021) 등이 있습니다. 2014년 핀란드 알토대학교의 다학제적 석사 프로그램 Creative Sustainability에 Design for Government 수업을 설계하고 개설했으며, 2013년 여름부터 핀란드 싱크탱크 Demos Helsinki 사외이사로 초빙되었습니다.
그 전에는 핀란드 혁신 기금 SITRA에서 전략디자인 부서 소속으로 Helsinki Design Lab 프로젝트에 참여했으며, 헬싱키와 서울의 디자인 컨설팅 회사에서도 근무했습니다. 또한, 헬싱키-서울 기반의 디자인 및 제조 기업 About:Blank의 공동 창립자이기도 합니다. 2009년 한국디자인진흥원에서 선정하는 차세대 디자인 리더에 선정되었습니다.
